Yes, that is useful output. From that, I can see that the active profile shows that is configured for digital output. Is that as expected?
Code:
active profile: <output:iec958-stereo+input:analog-stereo>

Okay, that is also a good sign. How were you testing your sound before? What were you trying, that was providing no audible sound?

Okay, but since we've proven that audio works (speaker-test) we now need to understand what you were trying when you were not getting any audible sound. Were you trying to play a movie? Game? Streaming audio via a browser?.....

Edit: Sorry missed your recent post.

The IEC958 sink is for digital audio output (often implemented with a fibre optic interface). Do you want sound output via analog speakers? Via HDMI?

My ouput is via a small jack plug socket into earplugs.

HDMI?

Okay, then you should run 'pavucontrol' and switch to the appropriate profile via the 'Configuration' tab. Probably 'Analogue Stereo Duplex' based on the list of profiles reported in post #14 output.

HDMI?
You have two internal sound cards -one of which is part of the AMD graphics card (HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4000 series]).

Bingo!

Selecting "Analogue Stereo duplex (unplugged)" in Configuration gave me "Headphones (unplugged)" in Output.

I have sound now from DVD and browser so looks like I am sorted, I have to go out now but will just check other sources 'pon my return just to confirm success.

Thank you all for your help and patience, all this code/terminal stuff is way over my aging head, I am glad that you what I've done to make it work as I don't.

Great support though.

Long live Linux!

Well, running relevant commands and capturing definitive output is what helped lead to this resolution. Glad to have been of assistance.

Apologies for being away so long but I wanted to wait to see if the solution settled down for a few restarts then life got in the way.

The fix brings the sound back but is there anyway of making it default? as I have to set pavucontrol everytime I start the computer, which is a lot but I will start another thread about that issue.

You can edit the configuration file.
