Howdy!

Can I assume that you booted to a dvd originally, used the installer and all went well with the install, then when you rebooted this happened?

Welcome to LQ.

To build on Jefro's post, the more detail that you can give us, the easier it will be for us to help. Did you choose to install Mint to the entire hard drive or to install it along side of something else? What computer make/model was involved and what OS was on it before?

What happens when you try to boot? If there's any output to the screen, any error messages at all, consider taking digital photos and attaching them to your post (you have to click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the compose post window, then scroll down to "Manage Attachements" to do that).

culprite...HP Pavilion DV9700

As the hard drive was/is brand new....WD scoprpion black 250GB...it was blank, no previous OS.
We obtained an LLC Linux Mint 17 Live Disk, purchased from a computer store. We chose to install Linux Mint by normal install methods. Everything appeared great...until time to reboot, where the machine cycles the HP screen, then goes black...and the cycle continues.
without the DVD in machine the error is "No Operating System Found".
With the disk it will eventually boot after hitting F9 2 or 3 times, and then F12. The only way to get it to completely boot up is to choose either Compatibility Mode or the last option of Boot from local drive (DVD DRIVE)....the machine acts as if there is no boot record....
while i know that the OS is on Hard drive. i hope that is sufficient information???
THANK YOU for your time effort and willingness to help!

I bet your new machine has an EFI boot layout.

If it was me (with no experience of EFI), I would go into the BIOS and
switch off any reference to secure boot and probably opt for "legacy boot" (MBR).

You probably don't wish to do that though...

jefro 07-03-2014 03:34 PM

Before I guess anymore we do need to consider the efi deal.

What is a LLC linux?

the machine is actually not new....??? but i will look into that option....of the MBR

boog321 07-03-2014 06:43 PM

Or it just simply needs to have the new HDD set as a/the boot device in bios?

leo681 07-06-2014 11:25 AM

is it possible my boot menu problems are caused by a bad cmos battery issue....i still cant boot right ,,bios menu has changed by itself ,, or am i looking at a possible motherboard issue........it will work fine with live disk but refueses to boot up after u install it on hard drive..???

JeremyBoden 07-06-2014 11:50 AM

I think you will need to send photographs of what you think the likely "bad bits" are.
If it's a battery issue, you probably see incorrect dates in the BIOS.
Are all devices recognised?
What boot order is shown?

maples 07-06-2014 12:30 PM

Is the BIOS and UEFI (or maybe just EFI) system or is it a MBR system?
