Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon archive failure

I booted linux mint 13 maya with the cinnamon desktop fro a DVD-RW. My computer requires a download and install of the broadcom sta wireless driver for the wifi to work and to connect to the internet.

However, upon accessing the jockey gui and attempting to activate the driver I receive the message "installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at /var/log/jockey.log for details". When I attempt to access this log in the terminal I am told "permission denied".

I attempt to install the driver through package manager and it says "unable to resolve archive.ubuntu.com" attempting this in the terminal yields the same result along with other archive failures. I installed this OS on another computer and opened repositories with "sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list".

There is no difference in the repositories list for the computer that works with LM 13 and the one that doesn't. THis problem makes no sense because installing th same driver has never been a problem with ubuntu.

How do you access the Internet with that computer?

SimplyInquisitive 07-08-2012 04:48 PM

with wifi.

Then there lies your problem. Your computer tries to access the Internet to install the drivers for your wireless device. This obviously can't work, since you connect via Wifi and have no drivers for it installed. Connect temporarily using a wired connection to install the driver, after that it should work.

I think I have tried that before and it didnt work. I've always been able to do it with that computer with ubuntu, but I'll give it a try. Thanks for the input.

SimplyInquisitive, once you have the laptop wired to your modem/router, you might have to run apt-get update before installing anything else, in order to refresh the list of packages available in the repositories.

I have already done that. the same problem and feed back results with the wired connection. " Can not resolve archive.ubuntu.com:http". running the update command yields a long list of archives like this that the system "failed" to fetch. the terminal says they are ignored or old ones are used instead or suggests running "sudo apt-get update" to repair them or try with --fix-missing?

I don't have any trouble installing the broadcom sta driver wirelessly when I install ubuntu on this same computer. the adapter's light is orange, but I'll pull up the jockey (additional drivers gui) and download and install it then the light turns blue and I can use the internet and install the system. however, this is for some reason impossible with mint.
