Linux Mint 12 - No CODECS
 

What exactly does it mean when a GNU/Linux Distro says "No CODECS"?

The thing is, CD's are cheaper than DVD's and cheaper to screw up if

you find yourself in Linux Heaven and downloading everything you can, why

not get the CD version since you are "just testing" it. Therefore, the

NO CODECS version being the best choice for noobs? Possibly anyways.

Any help is appreciated, seems to be a rare question as I cannot find it on Google.

I'm not a Linux Mint user, but I believe that the CD doesn't contain the additional addons that the DVD contains including media codecs. You can still install them separately.

If you live in the USA or Japan, the media codecs are patented and have to be paid for. I suspect that paying once (which you've done if you've paid for Windows, which includes them) is enough, but I'm no lawyer, let alone an American one.

The CD with no codecs is intended to be distributed in the USA and Japan; a local dealer who sold the DVD would get sued out of business.

If you get a RW DVD, there's no loss if you don't like Mint: just use it for something else.

I know it was a super noob question, and I know the whole point of Linux is experimenting. It just remains to be seen by me, a Mint 12 user, as I am watching a YouTube video right now! I am posting this from a Linux Mint 12 32-bit NO CODEC cd image while listening to Iron & Wine, and I felt the question need be answered, Thanks to JesseJJ89 and DavidMcCann for responding, but as for this question I am not sure I will [Solve] it, at least for any would-be Mint 12 Lisa perusers. Comes with MPlayer and Banshee also as a side note.
I guess I will just say it like this, if you plan to LearnGNU/Linux, be prepared to be puzzled by some things. Enjoy!
