Linux Media Center - Remote Control

Hi, I have been running Windows XP on my "Tv pc". I have been remote controling it from my laptop. But as we all know Windows is not very stable.

I was thinking about installing Knoppmyth ? Is this distro the best for media center? And does it support VNC like windows does? Maybe another way to remote control it ? (i do not want to have a keyboard/mouse connected

VNC is platform independent. for Linux you will want to run x11vnc as that will work the way VNC does under windows.

FYI, why were you using VNC in windows when RDP is 10x better?

i have never used knoppmyth but have heard good things about it. i always just used either CentOS with the hacks to get the codec support i needed/wanted or Debian with KDE. either way i used KDE to have better support for Kaffeine a much better media player then mplayer IMHO.

If u mean remote desktop when you say RDP i used VNC cos RDP is only on WinXP Pro, i was running home edition.

I installed WinBSD on the computer yesterday, but having problems using x11vnc. Only get the shell thing when i connect using client, nothing more. Is it just my bad configuring skills/Low knowlage or is this how BSD works ?

(very new at unix system)

RDP is available for XP Home, but it is major gimped.

i have no clue what winBSD is, bsd is a similar OS to linux, but is not linux.

in order for x11vnc to work you have to open it on the computer you want to remote into with the following command INSIDE your GUI.

x11vnc -many

then you can minimize the konsole window and connect from outside computers you have authorized to connect.

FYI, this is NOT a BSD forum, thus the title of the site.... Linux Questions . org.

i know nothing of BSD other then it is a root of Linux.
