When I installed Linux on my laptop, I couldn't get into X even when I typed in 'startx' Do you know what could be wrong?

I'm going to try reinstalling it because I already deleted it off my hard drive, but I'm going to give it another shot I think... any ideas would be appreciated!!!

Thanks so so much!

could you post the errormessages?
To get the errors in a file start it (w/o quotes) as
"startx 2>&1 > startx-error.log"
