Exclamation linux lycoris - partition gone? downloads? ...

i have quite a lot of questions and lack even time to ask them all now - i'll truely become an active visitor... but to begin with; my story:

wednesday evening it seemed like my w98se-os was infecting with both virus, trojan and spyware that were not discovered at my routine check done every night. the next morning the complete system was a mess. after fixing the most things windows did start again but collapsed right after logging on.
i am in big stress and cannot afford the time to fix it. i don't either have the installation disks here due to moving from germany to norway and leaving those things behind... (stupid enough).

so i decided to try out linux, what i always wanted to do - but lacking time for the necessary experimenting i simply didn't do it before.

now i run lycoris 1.4 evaluation version. installing it, the system did'nt option any installation on formated c: and decided to reformat d: with all my - particularly important and particularly unbackuped - data. when the installation was done i did another one, this time the option of saving the data on c:, the system-harddisk, was possible.

now i see only 2.9gb of disk space, which is c:, the rest of my harddisk is not even shown on lycoris desktop! (just the cd drive) there is a file called "lost&found" which i have no admission (!) to open. running knoppix i see the same content on both drives - under ms-dos / windows i had a system- (c:\) and a data- (d:\) partition.

my question is: is it possible to regain the lost data? and after that, how will i be able to see the rest of my 40gb harddisk?? i have quite few data now .... ... but after all there'll be new information that needs to be saved.

today i downloaded corel photo paint 9 from unfortunately, the extraction didn't work. i have no idea if this is due to a mount-problem or something else. i closed the downloaded compressed file before - and don't find it again! is there a folder similar to "temporary internet files"? how do i open the download manager if not by downloading something? the website itself doesn't work right now and the program is very necessary for my way of using a pc.

what i really need, too, is a program able to resize, sharpen and color-adjust pictures and creating websites with them - without me doing anything than adjusting the preferences. i used to use "graphics works shop" from canadian alchemy soft additionally to corel.

apart from that i'd like to try out suse 9.0, college and mandrake, too, which i downloaded at the same time as lycoris. i am very interested in learning more about linux!

with best regards

Hi ungua and welcome to LQ.
Your post is a little confusing, but here goes...
You say that you installed Lycoris on the D: partition of your hard drive. If this is the case, then whatever data you had stored on that partition prior to installing has *probably* gone for good.
The reason you can't "see" the rest of your hard drive is probably because Lycoris doesn't automatically create mount points for your other partitions and then automounts your extra partitions for you. You'll have to do this manually, but don't worry, it's not difficult.
The download: really need more details on that one.

hi pongmaster, thanks for replying!

at first i had no choice: lycoris automatically chose d:\ as install location. i ran another installation and now lycoris is situated at c:\. if i look at the properties at "my linux system", it shows 2.9gb. my harddisk is supposed to have 40.
where do i learn how to mount my partition manually?

the download: i downloaded corel photo paint 9 for linux from a site called it was a compressed file - i wanted to extract it to /home/ungua. there was a folder created but it was empty. meanwhile i had closed the compressed source file. this is the one that i don't find now - and the website i downloaded it from, is offline.

hope, this was clearer. i'm originally german, if that is an excuse...
