Hello willmac81, welcome to LQ,
unfortunately Linpus is a degenerated version of Fedora (afaik). It would be good to install a full featured Linux distribution on the computer. It would be good if we knew a little more about your computer's hardware, could you please tell us how much of RAM and which processor it has? Can you open a terminal and execute the commands Code:
uname -a Code:
free -m Code:

Don't forget that the support for Windows XP ends on April 8. 2014. Newer versions of Windows (like win 7) will probably not run on your computer.
I think that you would be better off with a newbiefriendly Linux distribution. Probably Ubuntu or Mint need to much resources and don't run on your computer. But what about Lubuntu? it's Ubuntu with LXDE as Windowmanager. Markus |
Linpus is horrible! Get rid of it. You don't say which model you have, so I'll assume you have the smallest: 512MB and an Intel Atom. I'd recommend using Fuduntu, because
1. It will run in 384MB. 2. It's made with laptops in mind, and has software to reduce battery usage. 3. It's what we call a rolling-release. There are no versions: you just install once and then update it regularly. 4. The developers are a very friendly and helpful lot. Here's what they had to say to someone else with an Acer: http://www.fuduntu.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3150 Mint will be a bit too big for an Acer Aspire, and Ubuntu certainly will be (even it it runs with the Acer's video). If you sometimes found Windows a handful, Linux won't be worse, and you'll have people here and at the Fuduntu forum to help. The people who really have trouble with Linux are those who're experts in Windows: they keep forgetting they've changed! |
