Question Linux LAN theory

Im not setting up a Linux LAN now, but I started to wonder how a Linux LAN would look like.

Say a small company or home LAN had 3-4 server and a number of workstations, all runing Linux.

In microsoft domain, a domain user account is used to authenticate to the workstation, and to any M$ server like proxy, www, mail etc.

But how is this handeled in a pure Linux LAN ?
