linux kernel source directory problem, PLEASE HELP ME :(

Hello linux fellows ! I am a new user with this operating system, i installed on my laptop (old one Compaq armada 1700, 233 mhz, 160 ram) redhat linux 6.1 version, kernel version 2.2.12-20, and I am trying to install a pcmcia nic ethernet. I finally found a rpm file, solved the problem, i then executed the tar.gz driver for my pcmcia with ./configure and the following appears :

" -------- Linux PCMCIA Configuration Script --------
The default responses for each question are correct for most users. Consult the PCMCIA_HOWTO for additional info about each option.

Linux kernel source directory [/usr/src/linux] : "

I then hit Enter key and the following appears :

" Linux source tree '/usr/src/linux' is incomplete or missing !
The kernel header files are present, but not the full source code.
Configuration failed. "

I tried to write there many many paths, I looked in many forums/threads but no result ! what path should i write there ?
What shoul I do ? If anyone can help me please do ! Thanks in advance !

It looks like they want the full source code there. So you probably need to download the 2.2.12 source code from kernel.org or somewhere in order to compile this module.

Out of curiosity, is there any particular reason you're using such an old version of linux? Red Hat Linux 6.1 is circa October 1999. You can install newer distros that have security updates and newer programs that are still supported. The key is to pick a minimalist distribution like DeLi Linux, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, Xubuntu, bare Debian with lightweight programs and window manager (my personal preference), etc
