Linux is prefered over windows for servers

Hi all...

I am using fedora9, RHEL 5.4, SUSE 10 from past 8 months...Still I am new bee for LINUX....Even in my home I use LINUX and Only LINUX, No windoz or gates..I wonder why LINUX is preferred over windoz ?

I dont have command line hold on Windoz...So I cannot tell why LINUX is preferred over windows for servers....still windoz market share is high for desktops...

Those who have enough IT knowledge and use open source software (like Linux) can get computer services and tools for a fraction of the money (or none at all) that they would spend for commercial software. They still have to spend quite some time to set things up.
Companies and institutions on the other hand prefer commercial software, because they either do want to get qualified IT-specialists on their payroll, or do not want their IT-people spend time on tweaking software tools and instead opt for ready-to-use solutions, or they simply want some other company behind the software, so that they have someone to sue if something doesn't work correctly.

Dear Vinay, Linux is too vast. The deeper you will go the newer concepts you wil get and someone who like this will never switch to any other OS so easily.Linux is also too transparent as you can know what you are doing in command line mode.
I am using RHEl 5 server since last 3 years as my home desktop and still I am a NEWBEE to what its capable of .
As Linux is OPEN-SOURCE ,there are a lot of open source tools shared by developrs world wide to solve issuses. Also due to heavy security inside ,its prefarable.

Nice argument but it doesn't address the GNU/Linux vs mcrsft issue. GNU/Linux provides compartmentalization is EAL/CAPP certified by at least two companies for government use, provides RT and advanced messaging as required by for instance medical institutions and financial businesses and is readily available as long term commercial solution. In the end architecture designers will have to choose what fits that clients purpose. If for instance the software functionality one requires is only provided by mcrsft prdcts then GNU/Linux may still be better in terms of TCO but it wouldn't get one anywhere...

Great unSpawn...

Technically under what all the aspects that LINUX and Solaris servers performs better than windoz, why Linux is preferred as Server instead of windoz..

I Agree with the hospital aspect. The hospital that I work at uses several Unix and Linux machines. All our linux machines seem to perform alot better than our windows machines.
