Linux installation hit by a train
 

Hello. This is my third attempt at running linux on my server box. So I'm a little new at this. I just got the box up and running about an hour ago, and went to update the drivers for the video card (nVidia Riva TNT2) Got the drivers off nVidia's site. I went to console, logged in as root with "su" found out that I needed to close "x server" which I'm guessing is part of the GUI program? So I found these forums and made use of the search option. Excellent resource. Anyway, I used "init 3" to get to console mode, and proceeded with my driver installation. It fenished and prompted for another login. Some windows/dos inspired thought in the back of my head told me to hit the reset button, so I did. Probubly not a good idea. It restarted, started going through tests and for some reason reset itself again. Now to the fun part.... It loads up and spits out all kinds of failed tests then leaves me back at the console as opposed to KDE. I again used the search here and tried logging into root and using "startx". This just spits out more errors.... (Bear with me I had to type this out.)

hostname: Host name lookup failure
xauth: error while loading shared libraries: libXmuu.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Says that 6 times and then puts me back at the prompt. The distribution is Mandrake 10.0, and I *WAS* using KDE. Incase it matters the computer specs are...

PIII 800 mhz
384 mb SDRAM
30GB Maxtor HD
nVidia Riva TNT2
SB Live!

did you edit the /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4 file after installing the drivers ????

No I didn't. How bad is the damage?

lol, i thought this was news, like a linux dev got hit by a train. thats what happened(supposedly) to the guy making pearpc.

anyway, no damage. go edit it now and youll be fine, i think.

i gave up on mandrake after having something similair happen to me.

Sorry, my way of saying my box has been screwed up :o An update... I changed the file and had no results. I then went and reinstalled the driver. It now works in normal linux mode, as opposed to the linux-secure that I was running. Only problem is now that I HAVE NO MOUSE!:confused: :newbie: I have absolutely no idea how to navigate in linux using keyboard. The mouse itself isn't even lighting up.
When I do try to start linux-secure it tells me it can't load the nvidia module or some mess.

the mouse not lighting up is a computer problem. put it in another port and restart. it has nothing to do with linux.

Got the mouse working, used a usb to ps2 connector and its fine now.

But nothing else works. Network card was working, now it's not. Audio was working, now its not.
