Linux Installation
 

I am looking to Install linux on my machine, been using it for a while but on virtual s/w. Never installed it manually before. Anyone can suggest me a good ebook or other sources which could help me install linux/unix. Thankyou!

Yes perhaps you can list the things you use your computer for most the time.
That way people can advice you on what distro you could install. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, and OpenSuSE are kid of like all purpose distros. But then you can install distros that are heavily customize for multi media managing, Web server or file sharing, networking security etc. They are all Linux and they are all good just targeting different public.

If you have installed Linux distros to a virtual drive in virtual machines, as with VirtualBox, the process is identical to installing it to a physical drive, unless you are looking to do dual boot.

If you search for "install [distro] tutorial" you will find no end of resources.

You can also find lots of tutorials on YouTube.

installing is easy. Are you planning on dualbooting Gnu/Linux with Windows? If you're using Windows 7, you can shrink your Windows partition from within Windows, which is probably the safest way. You'll need to do this to make room for Your chosen Gnu/Linux distribution.

Select the distro whichever you want to install and then search for tutorials for installing linux distro on google. There are so many tutorials websites available for installing in different ways, which will be helpful for you.

I'd say that you 'grab' a wide spread distro which has well grown community support like Fedora or OpenSuse and give it a try. (mostly I prefer Fedora based on RedHat)

Don't forget to to look at the hardware specifications get a distro that goes well with your machine.

Install Ubuntu, Opensuse etc is very simple. Easier than Windows.

I disagree with that remark towards Opensuse. I've installed Windows 7 and Windows xp, and they were both pretty simple. I think Opensuse installer although not to hard to handle, is lacking in the user friendlyness simpleness. I'd rather install the easy text base Slackware and Debian. (Debian's installer is annoying when you want to install the bootloader to root though)

Gentoo is even more complicated to install.
Why not run live CD/DVD, no worry about installation.
Save data on flash drive. :)
