Linux Install
 

Is it possible to have the files for linux on a local partition and install from those? I do not have a burner and my wireless adapter is USB so it is unlikely I can do a network install.

Hope this helps, since you didn't clarify a Distro I picked RH

Limited info you have given so we are going to take a shot in the dark.

I have NOT done this myself.

Having said that, "IF" you have an existing install; say RH8 and you want to upgrade to RH9 or 10 I would say your chances are GOOD for success.

Assume you have plenty of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) space to store the new diistro!

"I" would download my new distro to a new directory created for the moment; say /0 or /a which will keep it out of everything's way.

Then start the upgrade and at the proper time select "UPGRADE," very important!

Then sit back and control what you want from the prompts.

Like I said, I have NOT done this but I would not fear trying it. 8>)

I neglected to mention, Fewyn, I briefly HAD RH8. RUN, do not walk to the nearest upgrade to RH9 or 10. RH8, IMHO, is possibly the WORST RedHat distro ever. RH5.1, RH5.2, RH7.1, RH7.3, RH9.0 are INFINITLY better than RH8.0. If you LIKE RH8 you wiill LOVE RH9! RH10 I have no experience with. I will soon Upgrade at least one machine to RH10. I'm moving some things to OpenBSD as we speak. I've a brief usage period of FreeBSD a year or so back. Lindows4.0 is an interesting concept and is especially good for users who don't want to have to learn any more than they absolutely have to.

Oh... forgot I do not have linux currently installed and I have 0 linux CDs and I also do not have a burner so I can burn them.

Good news/bad news!

The GOOD news is that Lindows4 WILL install on download. Guaranteed!

BAD news is it's commercial. (You have to pay for it.)

I think you can!

For more detail we need to know in what state your HDD is in. (Can you boot it now? Into what OS, etc.? )

I can boot into Windows XP Pro currently.... I have 2 HDs one 20GB and one 6GB

On which HDD is M$Window$ on?

Do you intend to make it dual boot? (Boot into XP OR linux) or were you going to make it a lindows only box?

Browse to the installation howto, i think they have explained howto install from hard disk.

see my posts in the distributions/slackware/"slack instillation" thread. I go over how I used a mounted .iso image to install slackware. Most distros have the loopback device I speak of available.
If you can boot from floppies, then half of my post won't even apply to you.

@jdh77 Right now Windows is on my 20gb HD I was planning on using my 6gb HD for Linux. And yes I was going to dual boot.
