Listen to these guys' posts. I'm a newbie too and I hear where you're coming from. When I first installed mine (SuSE 8.2 Pro) I had thought that it had locked up too. I "knew" it wasn't just taking forever because I have a P4 2.4 (Overclocked to 2.95), 764MB DDR800 (Dual-channel DDR400) along with a ATA133 drive. So it couldn't be that my system was just too slow :-). "What a surprise" I said to myself, "I f---ed up the installation!" But no, I was smart enough to let it sit for about another minute and it worked just fine. Even my installation appeared to have locked up but no it was just slow. Here's my (newbish) advice: If your boot-up screen supports a verbose mode (like mine I can press F2 and it describes what it's doing) take a look at it. Whenever I think it has locked up I do that and find it's just doing a whole lot of stuff. Otherwise, just let it sit for a while.

you know what, I don't use one either, but if you have stuff on there you might be sad to loose, it would be a good idea.

Slackware's not that hard... just choose it to install all packages... rather than trying to select them yourself and running into Dependency Hell.
