Lightbulb Linux FTP server and Winsock proxy

The company I work for is using Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0. I want to setup a Linux FTP server so customers can download files. Has anyone on this board done this before??? Microsofts web site tells me the Winsock Proxy client needs to be installed on the FTP server. Is there a Linux equivalent???

the short answer: no

microsoft does not like linux and currently dont port software to linux, basically i had a similar problem heres what you could do

put the linux server infront of the MS Proxy set it up to do ip forwading and that, then you can either:

tell the MS Proxy to use the linux box as the gateway and continue using ms Proxy

or

loose ms proxy and tell the clients to use the linux server as the gateway * Best Option in my opinion

if those dont take your fancy then ask your isp to give you an extra IP address and put the two machines side by side on the web

if your stuck just ask

I like the suggestion to replace MSFT proxy. However, management will ask several questions that I don't have answers.

1. How will the Linux proxy effect the website my company hosts using MS IIS?? The web site sits behind the MSFT proxy.

2. Will employees from the field be able to access data off an AS/400?? Right now proxy routes employees requests to the AS/400 where the employee is authenticated via the AS/400.

3. Will the Linux proxy allow internet usage tracking?? Magement likes to view the surfing habits of employees from time-to-time.

4. Will the Linux proxy effect the MS Exchange server the company uses for email??

depends if your site uses asp if it does you may have a problem, if it uses just basic html or its pure php its not that much of a problem just the hassle of moving over to the new server

not sure, i have never come accross as/400 stuff before maybe some one else could answer that for you in this forum
what does your as/400 do?

from what i can tell of stuff on the web you can make the linux box run like a router but force the web trafic ( http web browsing ) through a local ( on the linux box ) proxy server
i currently have a setup like this and need to push web trafic through the proxy server wich i will be doing later next month

this depends how you are setup, at one of my customers the mail server is setup to have its own ip address so the mail server and linux box can see the web directly and the DNS records for the mail server point directly at the mail server and not at any other box, i am working to get round this so the linux server is the only one to see the web and the mail server sits behind.
i have also seen exchange setup so it goes out and collects mail from an other server, whats your companys domain name from this i can work out where all your mail goes and if there are any other issues to consider

( if you dont want to post your domain name on the web then email to me using the profile button at the bottom of this post )

hope this helps
