linux from scratch

i am testing different browser,so i want to know wht libraries the browsers are using, how can i find which libraries the browser is using,so i thought of using linux from scratch,so can i install linux from scratch and run the browser i can find missing libraries,is this the correct way,can any one suggest me

Your problem statement is vague. If you want to know the libraries, you can do so by visiting the website of the browser. Well, again, Linux from scratch is unclear. What exactly are you trying to do?

thanks for ur reply, actually i want install the browser from source, and it should run with limited libraries,so if i use linux from scratch i can know exactly which it is needed to run the browser,i will install only tht needed things, suppose if it is like normal linux,it will run every thing tht are in linux and consumes more memory,if know exactly wht libraries it is using i can port tht libraries.

You can choose what programs you would like your Linux OS to start as you boot your OS. This can be edited! Well, You can go through the source code of the browser and compile it yourself. Making your OS minimal will only create problems. As I said, you can chose the services that you want your comp to run at the start up.

thanks for ur reply, actually my system should take less memory,if i use fedora or some other distributions,it will install all other programs which might not be using,so if i do linux from scratch i can save disk space, only according to my requirement i can install,if i do linux from scratch.

Linux from Scratch? Just go to their site and download the manual. Just be forewarned that it is going to take a lot of work. Think in terms of a couple of weeks if you're not very experienced with Linux yet.

Try Slackware?

If you want to build linux from scratch it is your wish. However, i would suggest that you try slackware 12.0. it takes very small amount of hard disk and is very reliable. building a whole new distribution is not a trivial task, even for experts. mind you, i am not discouraging you but just pointing out other practical options.
If slackware seems a bit tough to install, try using ubuntu or some other distribution with liveCD. they generally include only the most essential programs which a normal user would want.

Well, actually speaking, any Linux would suit your requirements. Of course you can customize. I advise you to install Fedora with it's SPINS for different users. As I have told you in the previous posts, you can choose the start up programs and reduce the boot-time. But, if you uninstall them completely OR do not install (while building Linux), you may find that it is not at all user-friendly. And if you want to install some softwares at a later point of time, it will be a hell lot of time.

Remember: a Linux distro contains only the minimal package. Thats not at all HEAVY. If you want to compile it from source, you can do it by looking at the installation-notes on the websites. One more option: you can compile Gentoo from scratch - I think this is what you need, since you disagreed on most of the options!
