I had a Linux system that froze everytime it was very busy, but it turned out to be the motherboard. It wasn't the fault of any software.

You can try pressing CTRL-ALT-Backspace to try to shutdown the X window system, or CTRL-ALT-F1 to try to get to a text console.

Either way if you get to a text prompt and login as root, you may be able to shutdown and restart the display manager like this:
Code:
/etc/init.d/dm stop
/etc/init.d/dm start

If you're just wanting to see what processes are running and perhaps kill one, use the top command in a terminal. Top displays the processes as well as the resources they are using.

Like what are you doing? The only time linux has ever flat out frozen for me wasn't really a freeze, it was my video card insanely overheating and throttling itself and then shutting down the system.

Could be bad hardware ... have you tried running memtest86 on the system? Also, what version of Linux are you running?

When mine freezes, both the keyboard and mouse are useless. There's nothing left to do but push the magic button. Worse, the logs have recorded no problem.

Does the hard-disk LED stay on solid?
What company made the motherboard?
Is the room hot?
