Linux for x86 - intel family model stepping 7

Hi!

I'm a n00b to Linux, and can just about handle my own comp, but am really enjoying it and finding a lot better than a certain other OS. I am therefore attempting to convert others, but a friend who wants Linux has the above CPU and the normal X86 kernal doesn't work. Any ideas? I am sorry I can't be more specific, but I really don't have any other details!

intel family ? model ? stepping 7
The '?' usually have numbers. In any case, Linux should work with his cpu, and the problem probably is not with his cpu but with something else.

The prossesor is seperated into a kernal and 'rest' (not my description) apparently it was a mass produced prototype? he can't remember the numbers unfortunately. I think it is probably a one off type...
