Qimo and Doudou are both designed for children from 3 to 10.
Doudou comes as a live CD with no access to the hard drive (for obvious safety reasons). It can be installed, but that requires downloading an installer (again for safety) and it is not intended to double boot. Hardware support is a bit weak at present. Some of the language needs revising (it's translated from French): e.g. "compose an image" should be "make a picture". DansGuardian is installed and set up with very tough restrictions to control internet access. Qimo is a little more conventional, and the language is better. The big problem with Qimo is that it has no parental controls set (at least, not when I last tried it). They recommend DansGuardian, and installing that is no task for the faint-hearted. |
Keep them out of mischief: give them Gentoo & LFS.

there is sugar-on-a-stick for one-laptop-per-child but i think it is for international children.

How is this related to Linux for kids?

Go to System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager and look for "ununtustudio" packages. You can install audio, video and other studio packages without having to have the complete Studio OS. You will not have the real time kernel but any apps or other features are available. |
Why doesn't Ubuntustudio use Unity desktop?
