Qimo and Doudou are both designed for children from 3 to 10.

Doudou comes as a live CD with no access to the hard drive (for obvious safety reasons). It can be installed, but that requires downloading an installer (again for safety) and it is not intended to double boot. Hardware support is a bit weak at present. Some of the language needs revising (it's translated from French): e.g. "compose an image" should be "make a picture". DansGuardian is installed and set up with very tough restrictions to control internet access.

Qimo is a little more conventional, and the language is better. The big problem with Qimo is that it has no parental controls set (at least, not when I last tried it). They recommend DansGuardian, and installing that is no task for the faint-hearted.

Keep them out of mischief: give them Gentoo & LFS.

there is sugar-on-a-stick for one-laptop-per-child but i think it is for international children.

Can I install ubuntu studio components in ubuntu?

TobiSGD 02-28-2012 05:10 AM

How is this related to Linux for kids?

Yes you can.
Go to System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager and look for "ununtustudio" packages. You can install audio, video and other studio packages without having to have the complete Studio OS. You will not have the real time kernel but any apps or other features are available.

Why doesn't Ubuntustudio use Unity desktop?

Why don't you have seperate threads for seperate questions? Because you don't want to, same goes for Ubuntu Studio and Unity they don't want to use Unity so they don't.

TigerLinux 02-28-2012 09:15 PM

why open so many threads? waste of resources. :)

So others who have the same question as your OP can get the answer they want without posting a thread of their own. Those who want to know if you can install Ubuntustudio on normal Ubuntu systems wouldn't try and look at a thread about Linux for kids.

Whose resources? your own energy maybe, but, as I pointed out just now, it is easier for everyone else if you do this. If it takes that much out of you to start a new thread then I'd suggest you have a nap immediately after you post anything :p
