LINUX first boot problem

Hi,
I heard about UBUNTU and tried installing it after using XP for 5 years. My PC configuration is P4 1.7 G, 1.25GB DDR RAM, 120 GB HDD and NVidia Gforce MX4000. My OS got installed pretty well without any problem. The problem started when i booted it for the first time. On the loading screen, the loading meter gets stuck at around 20 percent and the loading does not continue. It gives me no error whatsoever, it just halts. This is not the problem with UBUNTU only.. I have tried Fedora, OpenSUSE also, all have given me similar problems. If anyone can relate to this problem then please reply to the same; i would be really grateful. I really want to use Linux and experience the bug free OS. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Difficult to say based on the bar getting stuck..but reboot with nosplash option, to get rid of the "nice graphical bar" and instead actually see the boot messages (and hopefully the problem):

1) reboot/boot the machine
2) once GRUB shows up (the bootloader), get to it's menu; if the menu does not show up by default, press ESC to get it visible. You should, in this case, see a line like "GRUB...press ESC for menu" or something.
3) Once in the menu, hilight the boot option you want to use. Because this is your first-use-after-install, it's the topmost by default, which is already selected. Now press 'e' button to edit some commands before booting..
4) You get some more lines. Hilight the one that starts with word 'kernel' and press 'e' again to edit it.
5) In the end there's a word 'splash' - replace that word with 'nosplash' (type 'no' in front of the word, no spaces) or if there is no 'splash' word, just type the 'nosplash' in the line, separated by spaces from the other words. I think you need to press ENTER now to accept the changes.
6) Now that you've selected No Splash, press 'b' to boot that kernel..instead of the graphical bar you now should see messages; when the system stops loading, check the latest errors and post them here.

EDIT: those changes you made in GRUB are *not* permanent, next time you reboot they're "forgotten". To make permanent changes you need to edit the menu file, /boot/grub/menu.lst as root. As you probably prefer the graphical splash over the text messages, you don't need to do this..

By no means is Linux BUG-Free, it's "Almost bug free"(tm)
But to the point:
where did You install GRUB:
1. to the root of the Linux partition
2. to a floppy
3. to the MBR of the harddisk
4. I don't know, it was automatic
and we will try to help You ;)
