Question linux don't reconize some command

Hi people, I forgot my root password of my Redhat Enterprise Server 5, I entered in single mode and I changed it. But now when I login, does'nt load the gnome as X11, it load a command window and a clock, but when I write some command like "ls", the system say "command no found", I tried to init with gnome but I got some errors, saying "No found /etc/X11/... command, etc".

What is wrong ?

Are you still logging in in single user mode?
Have you tried a simple upgrade by rpm or yum through the command line?

Try entering the full path, like /bin/ls. I think your $PATH is empty. What is the out of "echo $PATH"?
