Linux distro recommendations?

I am having two points where I am thinking hard about linux distro. At home I want to build up a multimedia PC and then I am thinking of using a linux-PC at work.

Currently I am using Mandriva 2006.0 free and mostly I am happy with it. However, there are some problems that I could very well do without - I don't get everything to compile ok etc. - compiling a new kernel wasn't that hot either (USB wlan card stopped functioning - drivers did not compile ans so on). Somehow mandrake 10.1 worked better.

For this purpose I saw that quite a few people use Gentoo for Mythtv and stuff. I love mandrakes urpmi command - saved me a bunch of headache it has - is Gentoo as user-friendly? I've understood that it is less specialized than few other so compability is better.

For PC at work I don't think Gentoo (nor even Mandriva) is the best since they are rather dependant on internet connection and package server - I don't think I get so easily through the firewall and therefore I am asking whether one can get "nearly" complete linux that one could install from one DVD or so.

For a complete distro on a DVD I'd say look at something like Fedora, Gentoo is pretty userfriendly as long as you read the documentation. It is a source-based distro however, so you aren't "installing" packages so much as "building" them, then installing.
