Linux Distro Question
 

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 and I'm very pleased with it.

I've also just learned about the multi-desktop distribution. Hybryde. I've downloaded the ISO's for Hybryde and want to install it on a couple older PCs. I'm reletively new to Linux and am not really too sure of myself, as yet. I'm afraid that I'll mess something up if I install Hybryde on to my 12.10 box.

My questions are:

1) Will Hybryde work with Ubuntu 12.10 (on the distro page it list it as being compatible with 12.04)?

2) Would I wipe out my new 12.10 upgrade by installing Hybryde onto my Ubuntu 12.10 installation?

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

1. No idea, never used Hybryde
2. It is a separate distro so I assume its installer would give you the choice to either a) install side-by-side with Ubuntu, or b) replace Ubuntu (erasing your data) so Hybryde is the only operating system.
3. If you are a beginner I don't know why you would switch from the #1 beginner-friendly distro in the world with an incredibly helpful community at http://ubuntuforums.org to the #127 most popular distro in the world that frankly I've never heard of before today. :) What is the benefit to switching between 12 different desktop environments, why not just pick one that fits your workflow and customize it to your liking. :)

There seems to be a misconception here. You will not install Hybride in your 12.10 system. Hybride is an OS on its own, you have to install it side-by-side (or wipe the 12.10 before). When they say that Hybride is compatible with Ubuntu 12.04 they mean that Hybride is a derivate of Ubuntu 12.04 and that you can install Ubuntu packages in it, not that you install it on top of 12.04.

It was not my intention to replace Ubuntu 12.10 om my computer, I love it. I meerly like to tinker with it a bit and try the different desktops with it, ie Gnome, LXDE, KDE, etc..

I have a couple older PCs that don't handle Ubuntu with Unity too well and I wanted to use the Hybryde along side one of the older Ubuntu versions on those PCs and try to determine what works best on them so they'll work on my LAN. My primary intention was to install it on my wife's PC so she could select the desktop she preferred. I am going to switch her PC over to Linux from the "big OS."

I've installed some other desktops under Ubuntu previously and still retained Ubuntu/Unity on the PC. I was confused about the Hybryde distro and thought it was a desktop like Cinnamon or Mate or something like that.

you can still use different desktops on any your ubuntu 12.04 installation by installing any desktop environment you want from Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager
for example to try xfce type "xfce" (without the qoutes) in Ubuntu Software Center
another option is to install Xubuntu which comes with xfce desktop only or Kubuntu which comes with KDE desktop only..but this will make another installation/OS on your hard disk.
third option for a beginner is to try www.linuxmint.com
Xubuntu is suitable for older PCs

SMLR did a review of Hybryde.

If I recall correctly, it did not perform very well in Virtual Box, but did somewhat better as a full install, but, overall, the reviewer didn't seem to think it was ready for prime time.

Thanks for the info. I just love this Linux. I've never been happier with my computing as I have been since I switched over.
