Being unable to watch a video on a certain web page that requires some highly proprietary and crappy codec is a major failure now? I say it is BBC who has failed for using the Real codec in the first place.

EDIT:
I just went to the BBC site, when I clicked a video it gave me the option of Windows Media Player or RealPlayer, I chose WMP and mplayer-pugin picked it up without a hitch.

Well ... my comments certainly provoked a reaction. Now I have your attention ... here goes with a final attempt at getting some help.

I have MCNLive Toronto. Installed latest Opera and Firefox (RPM method). Both run perfectly. Installed the Helix based RealPlayer 10 Gold. The install asked whether I wanted Mozilla extensions - which I accepted. Works fine as a standalone.

The problem comes with the BBC plugin. The player starts up embedded - the control line changes to two white bars. The video panel is also blanked out white.

Using Konqueror just says there is no associated or appropriate player.

Opera reports that the audio plugin is there and associated with ra, ram. There is no reference to a video component.

So, where do I go from here? I've asked the same question on 2 other fora - the Mandriva one here (with one well intentioned but a reply which just led me into even more error messages - such as a component missing (something about rrtsp). also requested help on Mandrivausers without any answers at all.

Anybody willing to stick with it to help me get RP working?

Could be a codec (version) used the player can't recognise and parse. Better post an URI so people can view the source and extract the necessary stream nfo themselves.

IMNSHO your next post should start with thanking the people who already took the time to reply even tho you started out by disrespecting GNU/Linux.

I suggest you install the mplayer, mplayer plugin and codecs. Use your package manger to install them. Using the mplayer/mplayer plugin I've been able to play all these poplar codecs:

DivX Browser Plug-In
Google VLC multimedia plugin 1.0
QuickTime Plug-in 6.0 / 7
RealPlayer
Windows Media Player Plugin

Here is a section of realplayeer from my firefox

audio/x-pn-realaudio RealAudio ram,rm Yes
application/vnd.rn-realmedia RealMedia rm Yes
application/vnd.rn-realaudio RealAudio ra,ram Yes
video/vnd.rn-realvideo RealVideo rv Yes
audio/x-realaudio RealAudio ra Yes
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealAudio rpm Yes
application/smil SMIL smil Yes

Look at line 4, you should have realvideo with the rv extention in your browser. When you installed Realplayer 10 gold, it should have have included a realvideo extention to your browser. If not, then your realplayer 10 has misconfigured the extensions. By the way, if you install
mplayer, you don't need the realplayer 10 gold.

If mplayer and mplayer-plugin and codecs are installed and configured properly, it will work very well. It does for me.

Am I flogging a dead horse?

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa ... I beg forgiveness for the disrespect I showed to the almighty GNULinux. Come off it, please. Can't you lot take a little bit of cynicism?

Listen ... I just tried installing VLC with mozilla extensions. Exasperation to the Nth degree ... the Mandriva software install program tells me that a whole bunch of dependencies need to be updated/installed. I do the OK. THEN it tells me a libvlc.0.0.8.6a-2mdv2007.1.586.rpm is missing at some ftp site in The Netherlands and to update the media database. I do this only to be be presented with a 20 item list of lib whatnots and the instruction that one of them needs to be updated - which one???????. Doesn't seem to matter which, 'cos no matter what I choose, nothing gets installed.

Suggest a change from Linux to Sysiphus, or to be less classical, then Catch-22 might be a good name - because, believe me that's how it feels!

Right, so now the general help I seem to have received boils down to:

1. Common demoninator - you are an idiot because you can't get it to work;

2. If you don't like it, bugger off back to Windows.

This is exactly the same response I got when I asked for help in trying to get broadcom wifi working in Ubuntu - is it something in the Linuxer genes? or maybe it's the environment? Nature vs. nurture, who cares. In the event, I persevered and got wifi working in Mandriva and PuppyLinux but only by using the proprietary (aaaargh) windows drivers and ndiswrapper.

Special thanks to Masonm. I'm seriously thinking of taking your advice!

Just read dv502 - sounds reasonable! I'll give it a try - and many thanks for an instructive reply --- fingers crossed!

I haven't read your other threads, but I am willing to bet it is because of your attitude, based on what I have seen here.

dv502 - I looked in the Mandriva Software Management program - for the life of me I can't find mplayer listed. Stymied again ... or do I need to look for it on the web?

elliott678 - you're probably correct. Maybe I just can't take all this techno stuff seriously and with the proper reverence, Obviously a character defect. Or perhaps the key component is empathy - seems to abound when one linuxer communicates with another linuxer, but lord help the poor immigrant from Windows. Tchh! just can't help myself, can I?

If you don't act like an idiot and post in the linux forum, that linux basically sucks(summery of your posts)then people might help you. Would you expect someone to get help on any other forum if you said product x sucks?
If you change your attitude then you might get some help, but the way its going, you aren't going to get any help

I'm not familiar with Mandriva, but most package managers have somewhere in the menu to view repositories. You might need to enable or add the repository. Do a google search or check mandriva's wiki, faq or forums
on how to do this. Once you added or enable the new repositories you need to update the package manager database listing for the new changes.

IF not successful, then the last option is to install mplayer from source.

Here is a good how to for mplayer and mplayer plugin. I follow these directions when I was using slackware, and it work perfectly. Unlike
package managers, doing source installation doesn't resolved dependencies.
In the linux world dependencies mean libraries, header files and other applications. The installation is a bit involved, at first it may look scary to the new linux user, but it really is not that hard -- well sometimes.

http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.ne...all.php#plugin

Good luck

dv502 --- thanks for the advice! I'll take a 24 hr breather and start again following your tips.

In the meantime, FYI, I uninstalled Realplayer, then I did a reinstall using the RPM at the Helix community page. It all went okay, but this time it didn't ask for mozilla extensions. In any event, when I tried the BBC plugin page, it failed to display correctly - white bars, etc. If I launch the stream in the standalone it plays so far then the video just freezes. Ho hum.

I'll just ignore the other posters' comments as not helpful in any way.
By the way, it's 'summary' not summery, or even sumry.

Cheers.

One last suggestion.

Take a look pclinuxos 2007 http://www.pclinuxos.com/

It has a window XP look. Also firefox is preinstall with all the codecs
you'll need including mplayer and mplayer plugin. Download the live cd, and visit the BBC website and see if it works.

PS:

You have to be careful how you approach any forum. No matter if its windows,mac,linux/unix or other. Members will flame you if you rant
product OS sucks or complain about it. Yes, I know it's a free country and free speech, but then you have to accept the consequence of your words.

It's funny how things change. Back in the 80's and 90's. It was Windows vs. Mac. Now it's Windows vs Linux.

-later

Linux rules!!!

Time to go ...

Thanks for the help!

I've tried PCLINUXOS as suggested - have to say it's impressive! And very fast!

Unfortunately, the Mplayer plugin for Firefox still can't handle the BBC video clips embedded in the webpage. Mplayer works as a standalone with BBC clips.

Ah well ... it was worth a try, but can't spend the rest of my life reconfiguring the OS.

So, "goodnight and good luck".

Sorry, it didn't work on BBC. Hope this does not discourage you from using linux. What may not work today, will work tomorrow.

- Peace

castilla reply

Dear castagator,
(oops spelling) not read some of the responses as you have n't replied and may have been put off by the go back to Windows response but you need patience. Linux comes free but for ease of use how many hours do you spend at work to pay for it? There are many other issues which I don't want to touch on here but, perhaps I'm wrong, there is a distintion between 'plug ins' and plug and 'plug and play' within Linux or any other system.

These are the threads in which I have to question the OP's intentions. In other words, makes me wonder if they are one of those "all hail billgatous of borg" people sent to disturb us.
