Question Linux - Custom Setup

Good Eveningl:

I am new to the unix/linux environment. Despite my research I have not discovered a "consensus" configuration for setting up a Custom install drive partitioning. Below is my best guess but I am sure this shows my ignorance.

Mount
Device Point Type Size
/dev/hda
/dev/hda1 MS-DOS vfat 2047
/dev/hda2 Win98se vfat 4103
/dev/hda3 /boot ext3 126
/dev/hda4 Extended 23046
/dev/hda5 /usr/local ext3 6142
/dev/hda6 /usr ext3 6142
/dev/hda7 /opt ext3 4095
/dev/hda8 /chroot ext3 2097
/dev/hda9 / ext3 510
/dev/hda10 /tmp ext3 510
/dev/hda11 /var ext3 510
/dev/hda12 /cache ext3 510
/dev/hda13 /home ext3 510
free free 2071

/dev/hdb
/dev/hdb1 WinSwap vfat 2055
/dev/hdb2 Linux swap 510
free free 9845

The intended Linux function of this machine is to provide a Custom FC4-based environment that will support Apache, MySql, PHP and other applications.

If possible I would like the reserve the free space on /dev/hdb for a W2K3/SQL/VB6 server. This is not a production environment and I expect to enjoy a healthy dose of hurt. Thank you.

It all depends on the distro you pick. The most user-friendly ones only need /boot (under 50MB) and /root (more than 3GB at least) and you can make a /home (whatever size you want) to store your files and documents.
Distro's like Gentoo suggest having /var, /opt and the rest, but you don't have to have those.
Keep it simple. Also if your RAM exceeds 1GB, you don't really need a SWAP.
