linux connect through phonline 10m network
 

I have a 5 computer DSL network through phonline 10m network linksys cards. The downstairs computer is the main one with win98. The rest have XP pro. Now, on mine, i just reinstalled XP and dual booted with Redhat 9 with the Grub boot loader. Grub works, i can pick which OS to start and when i go into winXP i am connected to the internet automatically and everything, but when i boot into Redhat, it all seems to work but i try to search the internet but i am not connected. Please tell how, or where i can get information on how to set up my internet connection for Redhat. Thankyou.

However, you should know that although you can compile the HomePNA 2.0 (hpna2) module, you won't be able to load the module under Red Hat versions more recent than 7.3.

The hpna 2 module is a closed-source, binary-only module, so there is nothing that you can do about it. Broadcom, the maker of the HomePNA 2.0 chip (all home phoneline vendors use the same chip) refuses to release the source for the module.

I use HomePNA as well. It doesn't compile with kernel 2.6, so I anticipate moving my network to wireless at some point. This situation sucks, I know, but this is exactly why closed-source hardware should be avoided.

So basically i can't connect to the internet from redhat with my setup?? And if no, could i connect if i was wireless and how? Because the downstairs computer also has a wireless antenna but only 1 other computer uses it right now.

If you decide to go wireless, then may I recommend this thread: Netgear MA311 and RH 8.0, which also discusses Red Hat 9.0.

I'm typing this post over a Netgear wireless pcmcia card myself (with Slackware) and it uses the same chipset as the MA311 pci version. This Netgear card is quite reliable.

Follow the instructions in that thread; you will have to learn some console commands. If you have any further questions about wireless, I suggest starting a new thread in the wireless forum. Good Luck!
