Linux config

How can I change the default programs used to open files in X? As well as email addresses opened from Firefox etc. I would have thought they would all be stored in a nice config file somewhere and I might be dissapointed it that's not the case

You should take a look at The file manager section should contain what you need (looks like CTRL+O).
