Linux compatible LTE Modem
 

A newbie on your blog, and need to find a list of LTE modems that are Linux compatible (for Debian distro or similar). Need to be AT&T net compatible. I did a search on LTE issues / questions and see a lot of experts, somebody should know where to get something like this.

Don't understand what you mean by "Linux compatible" tho. Please clarify.

I'd ask how you wish to connect this modem but the linux kernel has a ton of support. I've used usb modems on routers (that run linux) with ease.

I currently use NETGEAR LB112 and it should be fully or near fully ATT however I have to say one last thing. T-mobile has never seemed to care about me using my sim as a modem even if out of phone. The main issue with usb modems and portable hotspots is the battery has to be in them all the time. A ticking time bomb.

Dunno about ATT. I'd assume you need a sim with a data plan instead of just moving a phone but check that.

LTE modems often come with a Wi-Fi hotspot, so there is no major compatibility issues for them: only a Linux-compatible Wi-Fi module and a browser to tune the modem via a Web interface is needed. If Wi-Fi is applicable for you, of course.

I am not a Linux expert, but I believe they want to be able to use IPTables as firewall to prevent unauthorized access, hackers, etc. With a debian distro as the base running on a NUC.

One has a few ways to connect to a modem. Via ethernet, via usb and via wifi. Ethernet and wifi will allow one to use normal connection usually if they don't need special connection and I don't believe ATT does. Usb will require the chipset be available and maybe a default connection method.

I think I need more details from our programmers / developers. Like the type of connectivity (USB / or ethernet), I think for security they don't want WiFi. Need to check with them. And I did do a LTE modem ATT search, lots of options.

If you're using ethernet or wifi, the mifi itself doesn't matter, it'll just work. Only if you're using USB does it make a difference. And then I'm not sure if any of the mifi's I've ever used work (with linux). But I just use wifi with all of them from work. But The Nighthawk LTE is definitely the one to get if you don't want to use wifi. AMAZING battery life, nice display, and Ethernet port. Can be purchased directly from AT&T even for as low as $50 refurbished to like new conidition (including the battery), that's how I bought our departments.
