I have installed Fedora 6.0. Have been trying to access my files on another PC running Windows XP. Have enabled file-sharing and have shared some folders on Windows. Have configured Samba on my Linux box, but I could not access my files. Referred to 'Guide to Linux' by Peter van der Linden. It look straightforward enough to access my files. But I still could not see my shared folders. I could ping Windows. I notice that in the book, Peter mentioned Network Share Manager but I could not find the program. I allow notice that when I configure Local Network Browsing I could not specify the workgroup name. This option is not available under KDE Control Center -> Internet & Network -> Local Network Browsing. The desktop I'm using is KDE. If I'm missing anything, your lp is greatly appreciated.
Try using an app called smb4k or Linneighbourhood. Smb4k is available for installation via your package manager. Another way to check if you have access to your winblows box is to open konqueror and type: smb://(put ip or hostname here) then press enter.

Thanks for your reply. After I posted my mail, I turn off the firewall on Windows PC. And it works ie I could view and access the shared folders on windows from my linux box. I thought I didn't have problem with the firewall because I have configured a trusted zone in the firewall for my local network. It seems that didn't help. It only allow me to ping windows when before I couldn't do it. I'm still to figure how to configure the firewall in windows. I'm using Comodo Firewall. If you have any suggestion s, please let me know.
If your firewall is blocking NetBIOS name resolution, this could be the problem. You can check this by doing smbclient using the IP address instead of the netBIOS name.
