Linux Boots Slowly!!!
 

Why does linux take 3 minutes (literally) to check for new hardware when booting? I am using Mandrake 9.1 and I don't experience this problem on my other machine running the same version.

Also, why is it that Linux will actually shut off my other computer but on this one it just says 'Power Down'?

Wild guess: Plug and play is not turned off in the BIOS in the slow booter

I'll check next time I boot, but wouldn't I want plug and play enabled? Great tip, btw, on the google for linux (in your signature)!!!

Not if you want your settings to remain the same between boots so that it doesn't take that time re-configuring everything. Then you can turn that thing off until you actually add hardware and it will boot even faster.

Yeah, makes sense... guess I'm just being lazy. Do you know how to solve my power down issue?

Why power down? I just turn my monitor off.

I'm too lazy to fix it in Gentoo as it's another kernel compule and re-boot to fix it. I just don't like to re-boot now that I am not forced to do so except when I compile a new kernel or change hardware. I might do it in August when I plan on going camping, but is it worth the trouble?

I thought Mandrake 9.1 was just extrememly slow when you first boot. I've been using it for about 4 months now and it's always taken around 2-3 minutes at boot. Well, I'm switching to Slack 9 soon so I shouldn't worry too much about it.
