there is a document called rute
it's the beginners guide to linux
it comes with mandrake, don't know if it comes with any other distro

or do a google search
or a search on this site

if you use file sharing you could get many e-books on linux ;
both programming and administration. if your using redhat i suggest u get hold of the documetation cd , it has been of great use to me ;

On the site of slackware there is a very nice book in html with a lot of practical advice.
