Linux BitTorent Question

Hello,

I have installed qBittorent on Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop and I really am not sure I understand how everything is suppose to be setup or how BitTorent works. I tried reading various qBittorent documentation such as what is posted here https://www.techsupportalert.com/opt...ttorrent-speed

Anyhow, since there are so many intelligent people here I thought I would ask the biggest questions I have. When these sites say "enable port forwarding", does BitTorent actually require you to have a host port open to allow direct connection with other peers? I assume this would be to enable other peers to download data you are sharing since I can download data other people are sharing without port forwarding.

Or is my intuition incorrect, say I am running qBittorent behind a NAT without port forwarding on my router can others still get data I am sharing (basically can I upload data without enabling port fowarding on a NAT network)?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Joe

my bittorrent program works (both leeching and seeding) although it usually says that the peer listening port is closed.
i did have to fiddle around with router and firewall settings though, and punch some holes in it.
i wouldn't worry about speed optimization and just get a general introduction in how to set up torrenting:
https://transmissionbt.com/help/gtk/1.06/index.html (outdated, but the port stuff should still apply)
