Linux Beginner Query...which distro to install?... programming help
I am a beginner in Linux and I would like to know the following:
1. Which distro is good for a beginner? How to install Ubuntu using VirtualBox, I do not want a dual boot with my Win7 x64?
2. Also, can I get some suggestions regarding learning resources for programming or scripting(if it is the same) in C/C++ on Linux platform? (I already know the linux commands but have never programmed in linux, also I am thorough in C/C++ programming)
Ubuntu is fine, just refer to standard documentation for virtual box. there is nothing "interesting" about installing ubuntu on an virtual machine compared to any other machine. just get the iso and boot a suitable blank vm with it as a virtual cd.
Once you set up the VM for the install in VirtualBox, the installation procedure is identical to installing the OS onto a computer; accepting the defaults will work just fine.
Ubuntu's (and most Linux distros') installation program is designed with the knowledge that it might be used by someone who has never installed an OS before.
Don't be afraid when the installation routine inside of VirtualBox asks if it can reformat the hard drive. It's referring the the virtual hard drive, not the real one. The installation CD has no way of knowing the difference.
