Linux based SIP server for use with softphone


I need to set up a SIP server that i can use with a software phone(softphone) in order to make internet calls..i'm not sure where to start.kindly help on the right way forward.

do you really need a sip server? you may only need an account with a voip provider such as voip.ms.
