Linux backup of gnome settings, icon placement, etc

Hello,
I would like to create a backup of all my data to the depth that if I loose linux, I can pull in all my settings. Settings like the icon placement on the desktop, the way I have the panel icons setup, and all the program settings (ie themes, korganizer settings etc.) I just want to put the backup onto a DVD (I know how to write to the drive) for safekeeping. Can anyone reference me to a document that outlines this? Is copying every file, including the "dot" files in my home directory good enough to do this?

Thanks,
~Mark

Yea all the settings you are talking about are usually stored in the .XXX directories within your home directory. They are usually created the first time you run an application. If you delete them, they will be recreated with default settings the next time you run it. As far as backing up other system configuration files, /etc stores pretty much all the important ones.
