Question Linux/Backtrack playing video on external monitor for my laptop

K guys, I've got a laptop running Backtrack4 and an external tv/monitor.

My question to you gurus: Is there a program/command/configuration file that I can use to allow my laptop and monitor to connect with one another via HDMI?

IIRC: Backtrack 4 still uses /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I note that this is primarily a cracker/security tool - useful if you are a security professional but there are better distros out there for pretty much anything else.
