Hi,

I can see my Linux machine in my Windows Network neighborhood--but I can't access any of the files. I keep getting an error that says "The specified computer did not receive your request. Try again later." Can any one help.

How are you accessing the computer? By ssh?

You are obviously using samba, otherwise you couldn't see your linux box in windoze network neighborhood or am I missing something here?
Are you running a firewall/router? if you are, check the settings.
Doublecheck your samba.conf file, if you're using unencrypted streams, a couple things should be changed in the windoze registry,

I was trying to connect from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP using File Sharing and got this error message ("The specified computer did not receive your request. Try again later.") I could see the XP machine just fine, but as soon as I try to open it, I got this message.

I have TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed on both machines. I'm using default bindings on Windows 98 SE (i.e. all bindings active). On the XP machine, with NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled, only when TCP/IP is NOT bound to File and print sharing, I get the above error message on the Windows 98 SE machine. So make sure 1) NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled; 2) TCP/IP is bound to File and print sharing; 3) all in the same workgroup and other basic stuff.

I vaguely remember from reading somewhere saying something like: you can think of "File and print sharing for Microsoft networks" as the "server" part of Microsoft networking, and "Client for Microsoft networks" as the "client" part.

Apparently, NetBIOS over NetBEUI does not work on Windows XP as the "server" when connected from a Windows 98 SE machine as the "client" I don't know if the reverse is true (I'm getting sick of rebooting the 98 machine every time you change some network settings :mad: )

Also if you are sharing a folder on XP, make sure you add Guest (maybe user name ok too) on the 98 SE machine to the list under the Security tab (not the Permissions button).

To test out your smb.conf file. First change security=user to security=share. Before you reactivate smbd and nmbd, disable your internet connection by disconnecting the power to the modem or flipping a switch on it. Then you can reactivate smbd and nmbd by logging in as su or root and type smbd -D && nmbd -D. Wait a few seconds and try accessing your LINUX system within Windows. You should be able to see the directories. If not you need to reconfigure smb.conf until you can see and access the directories. If everything is working correctly. Change security=share to security=user. Then add users to SAMBA. Also you want to add an entry to encrypt passwords since Win95 second edition and greater versions uses encrypted passwords. There are registry tweaks so that Windows doesn't use encrpted passwords.


Nah...too costly...they will just give you a run-around. Spend a few hours look through their knowledge base.
