Hello,

I have some more problems ...
1) How can I make my computer at the boot choose bitween windows (HD1) and Linux Mandrake (HD2) :Pengy:
I want to have a screen so I can choose what the computer will startup.

2) I'm in need of a good CD ripper and a good DVD ripper. Any sugestions :Pengy:

3) adobe pagemaker alternative for Linux :Pengy:

4) How do I create databases in Mysql :Pengy: what program do I use :Pengy:

Thanks

i can help with a couple of problems..

an excellent Pagemaker alternative is Scribus
http://www.scribus.org.uk/

and for rippers, i sue lxdvrip to make copies of DVD's. If you just want to rip to an AVI file, do a google search for AcidRip or DVD:RIP

For ripping music CD's most distros already come with something. If you are a KDE user, KAudioCreator works like a dream.

1) Mandrake should have installed Lilo as the default bootloader. It should have also picked up your windows partition and added it to the list - should be the last item.
If you're not getting a graphical bootloader, you can change that in the MCC under the Boot section. Set it to "lilo with graphical boot".

2) Grip for CD ripping comes with Mandrake as standard. Set it up right and it's the nuts.

I suggest "mencoder" though for DVD ripping. Run from command line but really customisable + quality.

Any sugetsions?

uh oh :p
So I've installed Linux Mandrake 10.0 on the Windows partition of my father.
After the install, when I restarted, it gave indeed a message wich OS to choose.
We first chose Linux to see if it worked.
After rebooting (it worked) we chose windows.
well, guess what? it didn't worked.
I had a GREAT laugh.
Realy, I'm still sniggering with laughter.
However, I need to fix this little problem ...
Any sugestions?

You can use many methods. The easiest is probably to run mysql shell (the program is called 'mysql'). Then you can type the right 'CREATE' command. If you're not very good in SQL, you can also install and use phpMyAdim (requires Apache and PHP). It's a GUI you can use from a web browser and create the database by clicking.

How do you think that would work afterwards?

hehe, well, It's the second time I've installed it...
A PC technician has interupted my work and installed windows ..

Normaly when you install linux mandrake 10.0 you can choose
where you want to install.
One of the optios is to install it on an existing windows partition.
This would make the pc start the boot screen where you can choose wich OS you want
to startup with.
You can choose linux
linux-f
...
and after all you can choose windows.
so normaly it would be possible.
However, I'm only getting a flashing underscore and a hell of a laugh ...

Hope you'll be able to help.

If you have installed Mandrake on the Windows partion it means that Windows was removed. Are you sure you have choosen that option?

zLinuxz 09-09-2004 03:11 PM

sure, if you can please put here, what the error output message is when you try to boot Winblows please, and we'll take it from there.

tidasu 09-09-2004 03:20 PM

@ Mara: Thanks.
I have installed apache and PHP. However, when I want to run my own apache server, I can't edit, add or other .
Have you got any sugestions to make the system see that I am the owner of this apache server?

For your second reply, I need to disagree.
When I startup Linux, I can see the bootscreen where you can pick Linux, and the other 4. Only now I have a extra option: windows.

@zLinuxz: Well, I don't really get an error ...
Normaly when you startup windows you have a second or 2-3 a white underscore above at the screen that blinks, then you get the bootscreen of
windows. However, the gentle underscore doesn't want to quit blinking. So I got a black screen and a blinking underscore.

Hope you can help.

Kind regards

Apache has its own directory and it must have permissions to work on it. Plus if you use port 80 normal user is not enough. In simple words: run it when you're root (or configure to start at boot).

It may be that it wasn't removed, but the boot menu is not an evidence. Just make sure you have /mnt/windows (or a directory with similar name) and Windows files inside.

tidasu 09-09-2004 03:46 PM

Ok, Then I've got good news :p
When I go to the mount Dir (/mnt/) I see the windows partitions, I can open them, and I see windows and all the files that were on them.
So, windows still exists but does not boot.

Help:( ?

Kind regards
