Remove the Linux partitions, remove bootloader from mbr, re-partition and format your drive as fat32, then install Windows.

Ranish Partition Manager

How to Remove Linux and Install Windows XP
You can remove lilo from the mbr with
/sbin/lilo -u
You can remove grub or lilo from the mbr by booting with a Windows 98 boot floppy (at the prompt, type fdisk /mbr)

Heh... Can some one Make me a Tutorial on this? It would be very very helpful, I am not very good with the Command-Line and dos...

I read the How to Remove.. it looks like there is more to it then I can see... I also have no Floppy drive my old one was burned out..

Well, what OS do you want to put? Win98 or 2k?

UltimaGuy 12-30-2003 04:39 AM

Cos if it is Win98, you have to have the DiskManager of your hdd to reformat your hdd.

If you have or can get a copy of Knoppix then use cfdisk to repartition the drive for fat32 and then use your Win '98 disk to format the drive.

Does that Ranish Partition Manager do everything you need, As kill the Linux partitions, remove bootloader from mbr, re-partition and format your drive as fat32, then install Windows?

I read over the Remove Linux and Install WIndows, But on there it says nothing about removing LILO, which is the master booter that make only Linux thing Boot.. It just talks about the Removing of the Partitons and then Install Windows? It sounds confusing from what you guys are saying and what it is saying?

If the MicroSoft Tutorial is right. Then all I need to do is remove my Linux Partitions and Install windows with a Windows OS Bootable CD right?

That is what you need to do. The Windows install automatically removes all bootloaders. 'fdisk /mbr' from a dos disk is how to do it manually.

Well then My Windows 98SE is not Bootable then if it doesn't boot?

I changed my NetBios to CDROM.. Is there any way to boot It? Or am I at square one with the question, bye removeing the Partitions? I don't have a Floppy or a Dos Floppy...

If your win98SE disc isn't bootable then it is the SE upgrade disc, and you will need the original win98 install disc. (assuming your PC can boot from CDROM...)

ok...... For it to boot up do I have to kill LILO and all that other stuff?

Elendil 01-02-2004 10:04 PM

It should work..........just make sure there is a space in between, like so:
Code:

fdisk /mbr
Another reason it might not work is fdisk couldn't be found....use a win98 startup disk and it should work

Not really. Once you find a bootable cd, make sure the settings in the BIOS boot the cd before the hard drive......a common bootup order from the BIOS is floppy, cdrom, then hard drive :)
