Linux and Earthlink Webmail

I tried setting up Kmail to retrieve mail from my Earthlink Webmail account. I received both smtp and pop error messages. I then tried to do the same thing with mozilla mail and received the same error messages. I deleted both accounts and went to Yast (Suse 9.2) to stop the any accounts. According to Yast I have no accounts setup. My problem is: Earthlink is telling me that my mail is being pulled off their server to my account. I can log onto mail from a console and see the email messages. How do I stop them from being downloaded to my machine and how do I set it up to use Kmail or Mozilla mail? I'm new and have tried reading all the manuals but nothing explains this. Please help.

Mail is probably not downloading the messages from earthlink's server, not unless you are using mail to get your messages from the "postoffice", which has to be configured.

The errors you are getting, (assuming that they are the ones that I think they are, since you did not post any text from the errors), are probably from improper server addresses.

Please post the errors and the server addresses so we can help you better.

I have not configured any "postoffice." I didn't know I needed to (oops). The addresses I used from Earthlink were pop.earthlink.net and smtpauth.earthlink.net. Earthlink tells me these are the proper settings. The error messages I received are 'could not connect to pop.earthlink.net' or 'access denied to smtpauth.earhlink,net'. After doing some tweaking I would receive error messages to that affect but I don't know them verbatim right now. Sometimes my test message would go out but I couldn't receive it (the pop error message) and sometimes I couldn't even send it (the smtp error message). Does this make sense or help? Or do you need the error messages verbatim? I have deleted all entries in the Mail and Transfer Agent so now it looks like my email is staying on the Earthlink site. Do I need to set up a postoffice now? How do you do that? Thanks for your assistance.

No you don't need to set up postoffice. That is used for the old mail program, and is not used by mozilla or any other mail client.

My next question is do you have an @earthlink.net addy, or do you have an old addy that earthlink bought out, like I do(@onemain.com)?

Also can you login and send and get mail with an internet browser?

Yes, I have an @earthlink.net address.
As far as the web browser, I can use Firefox, Mozilla, or Knoqueror to log onto the Earthlink.net webiste, go to Webmail and send and receive email. My Webmail email was downloading to my computer and not staying on their server until I went to Yast and disabled all email setups in Mail and Transfer agent. Even though it was downloading to my computer, I couldn't read it with an email program. I could read it by going to a console and typing Mail. I have followed the directions (several times) to setup the email programs, but something is missing to make them work. That's where I'm stuck. Thanks for your help.
