Linux and Apache2

I had no problem installing and running Apache2 on my Win 2k Pro machine.

But, I can not even get access to it with the Debian Sarge Linux installation.

I have reset all of the Apache2 directories to chown 777, hoping that would help.

When I check the directory listings with mc it shows the permissions are all 777 and the owner is root/root.

I am logged in as root. Yet when I try to access the directories all I get is:

You don't have permission to access /*****/ on this server.

How can I not have permission??? I am the owner and the permissions are set to 777.
