Linux amatuer

I have started using linux for the first time, its been 2 days now. I am sad that I was using windows all these years and at the same time I am glad I've been introduced to linux because of an operating systems(Harvard material) course that I am currently enrolled in.
I have a lot of catching up to do and was wondering where to start. I want to learn how to use linux quickly as time is the essence for me at the moment.
Could anyone tell me what are the things most commonly used in linux so i can get started on those and eventually understand linux source code.

what "Things"? what is a "thing"? Your best bet is to just start of by being a user, understand how to install software etc., and then the bits you want to learn more about will become apparent in good time.

Good tutorial

Remember, this is an entire OS, plus 100's (1000's ?) of services/apps.
We can answer specific qns, but that one is way too broad.

If your course specifies a particular distro, probably best to get a copy of that or the nearest you can.
Then just work your way through it and ask qns as each subject/tool comes up, if you get stuck.
