Linux Acer Aspire One: Connecting to a secure wifi hotspot

Hello there,

I have just started University, They have wireless hotspots covering nearly the whole city centre.

The hotspots are secure and I have to use my uni login details to connect.
My problem is that the instuctions for setting up the connection with a linux pc are only for Ubuntu and I can't seem to use them.

Basically it tells me to download a .pem file (a certificate file i assume)

then to put in the following information:

WPA2 Enterprise, as the wireless security
PEAP, as the EAP method
username
password
and to leave the rest of the options to their defaults.

When I try to connect to the hotspot I get a popup asking me to choose the wireless security method though a drop down list, but the list is empty so i cannot continue.

Is there a way I can set up the connection through the terminal, or another way?

Sorry if my post is a bit confusing, I was in a hurry to write this.

Thank you for your time,

Zlatan.
