Linux 8 Screen Res Stuff Up

Hello All,

I am new to Linux,
I have installed Linux 8 (psyche) on my laptop with a dual boot to Windows XP.

The installation when perfectly and I am able to boot into both OS's.

After I installed linux I changed the screen resolution from within Gnome and did a reboot.

Now whenever the system boots I get a blue screen with two buttons in the middle of the screen - the text on the buttons is un readable and I have tried to click (they are text based) on both with the same resolt, the system drops me back into the Black shell screen and askes me to log on.

I can log on as root with no problem - but is there a way I can change the screen res from the schell??

Chreers
Paul

In red hat 8.0 got to the /etc/X11 directory and run XF86Config. You'll have to go through the whole video mouse and monitor setup but that should let u play with your settings till u find the right combination of video drivers and monitor to be able to load your GUI.

sorry about that, when u are at the prompt just type xf86config and that should get u to the xfree86 config program. Make sure you type it all lowercase.

Thanks for the responce :)

... but
once I log in as root in the sheel i get this prompt:
[root@localhost roo]#
when I enter /etc/x11 I get:
-bash: /etc/x11: No Such file or directory

I am familiar with dos commands - but not Linux - I'm sure this is simple but I'm just a dummy on Linux :)

Thanks phoenix,

I was able to re-configure the video - as yet I have not found a configuration that works :( but I'm trying.

I have a Toshiba Laptop with an Nvida GeForce2 Go - there is not much support for this and the generic Nvidia driver does not seem to work.

Thanks again

The Generic Vesa driver worked!

Try getting the official nVidia drivers from nvidia.com

cd /etc/x11 won't work because UNIX is case sensitive, you meant

cd /etc/X11

use tab completion to help get around this

Thanks mhearn for the tip - I tried the Nvidia drivers - but they did not work as i have a Nvidia GO on the laptop - Nvidia don't even have these drivrers for Windows on their website - I have to go to the Toshiba web site.
