linux 7.3 problem
My linux 7.3 has some problem recently.
It often shutdown by itself especially when the Graphic interface is in using. What is the problem? Thanks!!! |
You haven't supplied enough information for anyone to help you. For example, what is the distribution you are using? What you where doing when the computer crashed.
Are you saying that X-Windows crashes and leaves you in the virtual terminal? Or does the screen go black when you try to start X? Can you examine the messages in /var/log? Often they will have information about what happened. Or is it a partitcular program that is causing the problem. Sometimes, you can start a program from the shell and it will print messages. You can redirect the messages to a file to be read later in case the X-Windows crashed. example: >program 2&>~/program_messages_file. |
In fact, it is my friend's computer which has this problem. I will ask him for more details. Thank you very much anyway.

And 7.3 ????? I don't think there are any distros still at 7.3 - it's likely to be an old unsupported distro that needs to be updated. And rather than you relay the problems/fixes between us and your friend, it would be more efficient for your friend to register here and ask the questions.

That is a good idea. I will tell him about this site and ask him to register. Thanks.

What linux 7.3, you mean Redhat 7.3
Redhat != Linux, get that |
Yes, it is Redhat linux7.3.
Details about the machine: In fact, I did not login to the computer(just the welcome screen), so there should be no special applications running. After maybe several hours, the computer shut itself down.(At least I think so. Since the screen was dark, but the power light was on. And I couldn't telnet into this machine from other computers.) I have checked with the installation CD of the processor, system board, memory and harddisk, and all passed the test. I have also checked the /var/log/boot.log, and it seemed nothing abnormal. What is wrong with the computer? Thank you all for your kind help! |
Does the computer screen go blank just after logging in? If so you might want to look at the /var/log/XFree86.log.

Press the <Enter> Key - the computer goes to sleep after awhile - it is still on.

I am Donghai Lin, the friend of xhliu who asked the question for me about my computer always switch off automatically with unkown reason recently.
Even if I do not login in the computer(just the welcome screen), the computer still shut itself down in a time less than 1 hr, some times a few hr. But I login in, and do not run any applications, in tens mins, some times , in a few mins, the computer switch off automatically. In few case, once I login in, without any minute stop, the computer screen go blank. I checked the /var/log/XFree86.9.log, I read some lines such like : xf860penSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse No such device Mouse 0; cannot open input device PreInit failed for input device "Mouse0" UnloadModule:"mouse" Keyboard "Keyboard0' handled by legacy driver No core pointer registered No core pointer Fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices Have you any idea for solving my problem? Thanks a lot. |
Dear Sir,
I have a new problem with my Linux WS system. I made a crazy mistake when I changed the authentization configuration and turned off "use shadow passwords" and "use MDS passwords". After that I can not login in my system anymore by using any accounts including root. How can I chang back the configuration to the original values so I can login in again? Which files do I have to modified for fixing my problem? I am anxiously looking forward to your help. Thanks Lin DH |
