Linspire install fails on bare Inspiron 3800 with ATI M1 video adapter

Hi all,
For my first venture into Linux I thought I'd go for the easy option and chose Linspire 5.0, but I seem to have ended up in a Catch 22 situation!
The story so far:
Cleared down the hard drive on a Dell Inspiron 3800 and started the auto install process from CD.
10 minutes later, just before the install progress slider reached the right hand end, the screen went blank and a weird pattern of faint lines in what seems like test-card boxes began to slowly appear, along with a few random 'splash marks'.
From what I can gather from the LQ forum threads, seems the problem is to do with it needing the driver for the ATI M1 graphics card.
Which driver would be appropriate for the ATI M1 card?
How can I add a driver if the install isn't complete?

All suggestions much appreciated!

Don't know but you could for instance try a Ubuntu or Knoppix live CD - where Linux runs from the CD and then install the driver if one of them works, they usually do. Check your hardware has the memory, etc..

The last item in this thread gives a concrete suggestion of where to get a driver,

Best thing's probably to persevere a bit. Is there some sort of minimal install or something?

Hope some help.
