type gcc in yahoo or google and it will most likely be the first result; go there.

linspire is a linux distro that attempts to mimick windows as much as possible, and probably sacrifices anything it needs to. maybe it doesnt isntall the gcc by default, or you didnt select it when u installed it.

when u got to that site, the first paragraph explains exactly what it is.
below that is the list of of the current versions.

if you think and do some research, youll notice that theres a link on the left menu for documentation about installing the gcc and below that a link for downloading the gcc.

GCC is a compiler. I'd tell you how to install it..but am not completely sure with linspire. In all honesty, I'd suggest SuSE to you as a good newbie distro. Linspire is really limited from what I hear, to use their package management, you have to pay for it.

Can you post exactly what you have done to generate that message about prefix? It will help people here help you. Basically, as I understand it with Linspire, you can either use their click-n-run method to install software (which costs money) or set up apt (see this. You should be able to install gcc via either method. The alternative is to look for a binary (not source) package on gcc.gnu.org, download it, extract it, read the directions (there will be a README file) and install it.
