Hi I'm brand new to Linux and have this very problem

But I don't even know how to get to 'terminal' on my Acer Aspire One

I don't mind entering code if that's what it takes to fix it but all I can get to is the outer layer of applications on the computer, no idea how to get at Linux itself or a command prompt

can anyone help me with this?

thanks!

Try <alt><F2> and type xterm. Can't verify as I'm not behind a Linux box.

MacLochlainn 11-30-2009 05:59 AM

thank you!

That gets me to a command prompt all right! Now for the code puzzle!

MacLochlainn 11-30-2009 10:58 AM

ok one last nervous newbie bit -

in

rm -rf ~/.gconf/system/networking

is there a space before the dash in -rf, and again before the squiggle, or not?

and thanks again

MacLochlainn 11-30-2009 11:48 AM

rm -rf ~/.gconf/system/networking
rm -rf

ok I've worked out that there are spaces, by copy typing it

wish me luck

oops I STILL don't know enough; when I've typed it in, what then? press enter? click 'run'?

help again!

oh my ignorance!

I blithely assumed what i got from Alt/F2 and then xterm was ok, but is it? it looks like this

[user@localhost] $

is that ok?

MacLochlainn 12-01-2009 02:09 AM

Hurrah hurrah

It worked. I checked somewhere else about the typing conventions, then put in the command and bob's your uncle.

Sadly the free wireless connection I was exploiting is now down but you can't have everything!

Thank you all again

Tindas1 09-16-2016 10:05 AM

exact input; no root needed: rm -rf ~/.gconf/system/networking no feedback if you got it right. many errors possible if you got it wrong.
