Limited to 60 FPS in Debian

Hi,

I had a problem recently with not being able to set my video above 60hz - now thats fine since its an LCD but I also can't get fps above 60 either. In fgl_glxgears and BZFlag thats the limit, and it causes my video driver (fglrx) to go crazy and eat up all the system resources it can (99.2% CPU).

My question is whether it's something to do with my XConfig-4 file or something, since 60hz is the max Refresh rate it won't let any program go above 60 fps either.

Of course it could be anything, I've tried different versions of the video card drivers to no avail, and even compiled a new kernel so I could do a oprofile on it so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please tell me : ).

Thanks,
Peter

Is 60Hz the max on your monitor? If so, I recommend getting a new monitor, I strongly distrust LCD monitors at the moment...
If it's NOT the max, can you print your XF86Config-4/xorg.conf?

pjpeter 10-09-2004 06:38 PM

Its a Laptop, the LCD is kind of attached and I'd like to use it : ).

In Windows XP I can set the Refresh Rate up to 200, though it claims its not actually supported. Other ppl have informed me that the refresh rate makes no difference to an LCD screen so I gave up on getting it above 60hz in Linux. I do know though that I can get fps higher than 60 in Windows even if its set to 60 hz (I usually get around 186fps in BZFlag, score 7900 in 3DMark2001SE). Anyway, ppl have been telling me that really the LCD doesn't refresh the screen but pixel by pixel as needed, therefore a refresh rate doesn't really make a difference, unless maybe Debian is detecting it wrong or something.

The only option I seem to ever have in the GNOME Debian Sarge GUI is to set it to 60hz refresh no matter what vid driver or XConfig-4 file says, though the screen res options do seem to change if I change them in there.

Thanks,
Peter

Oh and for the record the vid card is an ATI Radeon 9000M 64 mb DDR dedicated, the LCD is a 15" SXGA+ screen (native res 1400x1050) and the laptop is a ECS G732.

LavaDevil94 10-09-2004 06:58 PM

Well, I'm a bit stumped. Your XF86Config is obviously set to have rates higher than 60Hz for VSync... Can you post your XFree log in /var/log?

pjpeter 10-09-2004 07:08 PM

OK, I've managed to fix it so that I get up to 354 fps in BZFlag and 333 on fgl_glxgears by removing the 8 from my Capabilties hex code in the Device section. What that was doing was limiting my fps to the Virtical refresh rate of the monitor, which it thinks is 60. So thats fixed, but I still can only get 60hz on Screen Resolution options And more importantly my CPU goes balastic still whenever running either bzflag or fgl_glxgears - on top either app when open quickly rises to take up 99.2% of the CPU power.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Peter

Well, your log file doesn't seem to show anything wrong. It all seems fine to me now that your FPS has gone up. As for the CPU usage, when I run glxgears on my system (no ATI on mine, what FPS do you get with glxgears?), it's around 4700FPS but the CPU usage is around 99%, so I don't see any problems.

pjpeter 10-09-2004 09:54 PM

My score is 147 FPS on glxgears - mostly its BZFlag thats getting me, it goes up to 99% CPU usage as well and its not supposed to be trying the limits of my card. BZFlag definately should not go to 99% CPU

- Turns out I was using the radeon drivers on that boot, so I rebooted to the fglrx and I get "glxgears
8066 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1613.200 FPS" - BZFlag is still mucked though, and I know its not the game but something to do with the system and the vid card or something

Hi,

I have the exact same problem with the refresh rate. Xfree runs at 60 Hz although my monitor (not LCD) works best at 75 Hz. XF86Config-4 has the vertical set to 56-75.

(I'm also running Kanotix which autodetects everything and get a refresh rate of 75 Hz no prob. And I know I might be able to copy the config file over; but I wanted to install and configure a debian system myself).

Thanks.
